Pubblicati singolarmente nel 1841 e per la prima volta in volume nel 1845, con questo racconto Poe segna le origini del giallo moderno, introducendo nella letteratura il celebre personaggio dell’ispettore Auguste Dupin, investigatore dotato di un intuito straordinario.

Siamo a Parigi nel 1841, rione Saint-Roch. Nel cuore della notte, dal quarto piano di un appartamento della Rue Morgue si odono urla agghiaccianti. I gendarmi, richiamati dalle grida delle vittime e del loro assassino, trovano la porta sbarrata dall’interno. Costretti a sfondarla, scorgono davanti a loro uno scenario sconvolgente: il corpo sfigurato della giovane Camille incastrato nella cappa del camino e, nel giardino sottostante, il cadavere della madre, Madame L’Espanaye, atrocemente mutilato e con la gola tagliata. La polizia brancola nel buio: la porta e le finestre dell’appartamento sono ermeticamente chiuse dall’interno… da dove è fuggito l’assassino? I vicini affermano di aver udito, oltre alle urla delle vittime, le imprecazioni di un francese e una seconda voce stridula e irriconoscibile che sembrava esprimersi in un idioma ignoto.

Per la polizia si tratta di un enigma irrisolvibile, ma non per il geniale investigatore Auguste Dupin che, grazie alle sue conoscenze in città, riesce a ottenere l’autorizzazione per fare un sopralluogo sulla scena del crimine. Lo accompagna un giovane amico straniero, che è anche la voce narrante. Dopo aver osservato ogni particolare, Dupin sviluppa la sua tesi.

Un piccolo particolare non sfugge all’attento ispettore e potrebbe portare a una clamorosa svolta nelle indagini, svelando l’identità di un assassino dalle sembianze spaventose…

Lo stile di scrittura di Poe si compone di ossessioni, fobie e intricati intrighi della psiche che lo scrittore, come nessuno altro prima di lui, ha saputo rappresentare con intensità ineguagliata. Con I delitti della Rue Morghe, lo scrittore americano fonde elementi prevalenti nel romanzo gotico e nella letteratura dell’orrore e pone le basi per la nascita del racconto poliziesco e del giallo psicologico. Poe è infatti stato il primo a creare un poliziotto detective: Auguste Dupin, un personaggio che, con il suo acume e le sue straordinarie capacità intellettive, fu d’ispirazione a Conan Doyle per la creazione del celebre Sherlock Holmes.

Monsieur Auguste Dupin è un gentiluomo parigino, un passeggiatore svagato e curioso che esplora la città in lungo e in largo notandone ogni aspetto e contraddizione, restando al contempo celato allo sguardo della massa. Vive isolato in una grande casa vuota e ha una mente così acuta da dare l’impressione di poter leggere i pensieri altrui. È un personaggio romantico, decadente, quanto mai attuale, che sfrutta le proprie geniali capacità per risolvere i casi più enigmatici e i delitti più efferati.

Il primo caso di questo geniale detective, I delitti della Rue Morgue, riveste quindi una grande importanza letteraria in quanto si tratta della nascita di un nuovo genere, il poliziesco, basato sul metodo d’indagine e sui sistemi di causa-effetto. Grazie alle sue acute osservazioni, Dupin intrappola il lettore e lo invoglia a seguirlo nei suoi ragionamenti, invitandolo a capire qual è la pista giusta da seguire nelle indagini, ma soprattutto sfidandolo nel gioco più bello di un giallo: la scoperta del colpevole.

Il finale del racconto nasconde un colpo di scena che fa assumere alla storia una venatura horror che si può dire tipica di Poe, quasi un marchio di fabbrica che conferisce all’opera un tocco di riconoscibilità.

I delitti della Rue Morgue resta, a distanza di anni, un punto di riferimento per la narrativa del mistero e noir, un’opera senza tempo da leggere e rileggere per confermare la grandezza di Edgar Allan Poe, uno dei più grandi scrittori del Novecento.

The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.

Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.

The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.
